The Winged Victory of Samothrace is a 2nd century BC marble sculpture of the Greek goddess Nike. The Winged Victory series is greatly influenced by the boldness and power this female icon represents. As a student, I was interested in visual contrast. This led me to experiment with juxtaposing colorful abstracted female imagery with b&w photographic transfer methods.

During a residency in New York, I was impressed by the magnitude and energy the city embodied. I started working with images of New York, layering them with the vibrant silhouette of the Winged Victory. With this series, I began to thinking about the female perspective and how it relates to “self” identification.
